How to install the latest driver printer in Windows 11

You need to install the latest printer driver so that the printer will work well. But downloading and installing the latest printer driver can often resolve problems.

  • Use Windows Update
    Windows Update might find an updated version of your printer driver. Select the Start button > Settings > Update & Security, and select Check for updates. If Windows Update finds an updated driver, it will download and install it, and your printer will automatically use it.
  • Install software that came with your printer
    If your printer came with a disc, it might contain software that can help you install drivers for your printer or check for driver updates.
  • Download and install the driver from the printer

    Check your printer manufacturer’s support site. To find that, search the internet for the name of your printer manufacturer plus the word “support,” such as “HP support.”

    Driver updates are often available in the “Drivers” section of a printer manufacturer’s website. Some support sites let you search for your printer model number directly. Locate and download the latest driver for your printer model, then follow the installation instructions on the manufacturer’s website.

    Most drivers are self-installing. After you download them, double-click (or double-tap) the file to begin installing it. Then follow these steps to remove and reinstall the printer.

    1. Select the Start button > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
    2. Under Printers & scanners, find the printer, select it, and then select Remove device.

Fix driver doesn’t install

Install XPS & Fax manually

For Fax: 

  • Go to Settings > Apps 
  • Select the Apps & Features tab, then choose optional features
  • Under Optional Features, select Add Feature 
  • Choose Windows Fax and Scan and select the Install Windows Fax and Scan 

For Microsoft XPS Document Writer: 

  • Type Turn Windows features on or off on your taskbar and select the Control panel setting.
  • Find the Microsoft XPS Document Writer folder, select the check box next to it and select okay.
  • If the check box is already checked, uncheck it and select okay. Then reopen the Windows Features window and recheck the box to reinstall the XPS file printer.

Print test page: 

  • To check if your printer was installed successfully, you can print out a test page.
  • Go to Print a test page  
  • Choose Save As and then choose All Files under the Save as a type drop-down menu
  • When you name your file, make sure you add .XPS after the file name
  • The file will then print to the selected location

Install optional drivers manually

  • Open the Settings app
  • Navigate to Windows Update in the navigation panel on the left of the window
  • Select Check for updates at the top of the page
  • After it’s done checking for updates, select Advanced options
  • On the Advanced options page, select Optional updates
  • Select Driver updates if available.
